International call for artists

Two works of art for the MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI
secolo, Rome

Rome, October 2008: The Provveditorato interregionale per le opere
pubbliche per il Lazio, l'Abruzzo e la Sardegna, along with PARC -
Direzione generale per la qualità e la tutela del paesaggio,
l'architettura e l'atre contemporanee, announce an international
call for artists of every nation for the realization of two works of
art for MAXXI, the new National Museum of 21st-Century Art, designed
by Zaha Hadid for a lot in Via Guido Reni in Rome, which will be
inaugurated in 2009.

MAXXI, the first national museum dedicated to contemporary art, calls
for the realization of two works of art: one for the building's main
entrance lobby; the other for the exterior grounds. The overall
budget for the two works will be 1,130,000 euros.

The competition is in keeping with Legislation 717 of 1949, also
known as "the 2% law", according to which federal administrations
and all public bodies that undertake the construction of new public
buildings must devote no less than 2% of the total estimated costs to
the production of art works.

The indoor work will be installed in the main entrance lobby, a vast
and prevalently vertical space, and should be suspended at least 3
meters from the floor. The budget for this work is 430,000 euros.

The outdoor work will be freely placed in an area that includes both
open spaces and areas covered by projecting architectural volumes,
with a maximum height of 5.5 meters. The budget for this work is
700,000 euros.

The competition is open to artists of every nation, with the option
of participating individually or as a group. The deadline for entries
is February 7, 2009, exactly 120 days from the original date of
publication of the announcement in the Official Journal of the
European Union (October 11, 2008).

Entries will be examined by a jury composed of 7 members: Francesco
Prosperetti, General Director of PARC; a representative of the
aforementioned Provveditorato interregionale for Lazio, Abruzzo and
Sardegna; Maria Vittoria Marini Clarelli, Superintendent of the
Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contempornea, Rome; architect
Zaha Hadid; artists Alfredo Jaar and Giuseppe Penone; art critic
Mario Codognato.

The competition is organized in two phases: in the first phase, the
jury will select a maximum of six artists who will be invited to
present a draft of the work; in the second phase, the jury will
choose the winners to whom the two works will be commissioned.

The rules of the competition and the details of the sites designated
to host the works of art are available at www.infrastrutture.gov.it
and www.parc.beniculturali.it.
